The educational programs in Azraq focus on wetlands, wetlands protection, and wetlands biodiversity. Students are given the opportunity to witness the types of changes that have taken place in the Azraq wetlands, especially the disastrous effects of water pumping and other prevalent threats to the area.
At present, there are several different programs available to cover different environmental concepts. These programs include a birds program, which involves topics such as bird ringing, classification, migration, and watching. Students are taught the significance of Azraq as an Important Bird Area (IBA), since it is a major station for migratory birds, and the necessity for protecting such areas. Other programs deal with the biodiversity of the reserve, the relation of species to each other, the wetlands, and the local culture.
To facilitate student learning, RSCN has developed the Azraq Wetland Kit to give students a direct hands-on experience in wetlands field research. The kit includes binoculars and a bird guide to teach students how researchers watch and classify birds as they sit in the reserves bird hide. Using the kit, students observe the reserve as researchers do, duplicating experiments that reveal water quality, pH, temperature, and ammonia levels, measuring water levels in surface pools and tying these concepts with conservation efforts, especially in relation to the Azraq Killifish, an endangered endemic vertebrate species.
The Interpretation Room at the visitor center in Azraq Wetlands Reserve is also a valuable educational facility. In this room, visitors to Azraq can view the history of biodiversity in Azraq and the astounding species that may have occupied the area at one point in time; important birds and their migratory route over Azraq; the disastrous effects of water extraction; and the importance of conservation efforts on a personal and public level.
