Yarmouk Nature Reserve

The Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature implementing the Integrated Ecosystem Management in the Jordan Rift Valley project, which aims to establish a network of Reserves and Special Conservation Areas in the Jordan rift valley region,

Yarmouk area is one of a network sites, it was announce as a natural reserve on 6th of January 2010 by the Prime Minister and become one of the national reserves network which run and manage by RSCN.
Yarmouk Nature Reserve (YNR) located at the northwestern angel of Jordan, at the border with Golan Hill. Total area of YNR is 20 km2 , its separated for two main topographic areas : mountains which covered by deciduous oak it’s up to 500 m high above the  sea level and punctuated by valleys of small and medium descend towards the Yarmouk River , small and medium descend have a seasonal runoff with the exception of Shag Al Bared valley.
YNR located at Mediterranean Biogeographical zone which has a warm climate in summer and cold in winter with average rainfall 400 mm / year.


 YNR has two vegetation types: Deciduous Oak forest and fresh water vegetation type. The rapid assessment surveys show that there are 59 plant species: Deciduous Oak which is the national tree in Jordan, Atlantic Pistachio, White Willow, Oriental plane, Orchid Anatolian and Aleppo Pine.
Fauna rapid assessment shows that 20 mammalian species were recorded:
Arabian Gazelle, Stone Marten, Rock Hyrax, Egyptian, Jungle Cat, Asiatick Jackal. Also 58 Bird species were recorded which calculates 14% from Jordan Avifauna: Kestrel, Chukar, Sand Partridge, Moorhen, Hoopoe, Syrian Woodpecker, Collared Dove and Bee-eater.

Also 15 herpetofaunal species were recorded at YNR: Green Toad, Palestinian Viper.
The main challenges in YNR are: Overgrazing, Soil erosion, Wood cutting, Hunting, expansion of agricultural lands and random tourism, RSCN is preparing integrated management plan to solve this threats in participatory way with local communities.
